Every nomination is read and taken seriously so please elaborate on your reasons for the nomination as much as possible. The PTO awards this special recognition to one K-3 teacher and one 4-6 grade teacher each year.
* Important Safety Reminder - The weather is getting warmer and students are starting to ride their bikes, scooters, skateboards, etc. to school. Remember that once students are on school property, they are to walk with their bike, scooter, skateboard, etc. Students are not to ride them in the parking lot or on school sidewalks or the playground, due to safety concerns.
* Important Safety Reminder - ALL visitors need to check in at the office and get a visitor's badge before going anywhere in the school.
* New - Help our kids raise funds for our sister school in Kenya! Last spring, US Synthetic coordinated a fundraiser between Westridge Elementary and a Mvindeni primary school in rural Kenya. The children of Westridge performed chores at home to earn $3, which they donated to the school in Kenya to build desks for the children there. The children of Westridge raised over $1,700 through their efforts. The students in Kenya, for their part, planted 600 trees in their school yard, to earn the desks that were built for them. The program was a great success and a huge benefit to both the children of Westridge and the children of the Mvindeni Primary School in Kenya.
The headmaster of the primary school and our own Principal Gibbs would like to continue the relationship between our two schools, in partnership with US Synthetic and Choice Humanitarian. We would like to repeat the fundraiser we did last spring and set a goal to raise $2,000. This year, the funds will be used to build classrooms for the 800 children there. Please help your child find a suitable task at home where they could earn $3 to bring to school to contribute. Ask your children about the inspiring video from Kenya of their efforts last year and the help it provided to their "classmates" in Kenya. We hope to continue to let our children interact with their counterparts on the other side of the world, increase their global awareness and realize that each of us can make a difference in the world, even in small ways. We hope you will want to participate again this year.
Let's Raise $2000 to help our sister school in Kenya!

Utah Write
Westridge has acquired access to an online writing program called Utah Write for our 5th and 6th grade students. Utah Write has over 20 topics for students to write papers on in the Practice section of the site. It scores your student's paper immediately according to the Six Traits writing program on a scale of 1 to 5 and gives feedback on how your student can improve their paper. Students can revise their papers and resubmit them up to 10 times to improve their scores.
Utah Write also provides lessons to help your student improve their writing. The program will automatically recommend certain lessons based on your student's writing, but there are also other lessons your student can use under the Learn section of the site.
Westridge has just acquired 3 student computers for each classroom. During center time we will have 20 minute rotations for students to work on Utah Write. Every 2 weeks students will receive a writing assignment to enter into Utah Write.
Students can also work on Utah Write at home since it can be used anywhere with an internet connection. They can work on their papers, writing and revising, and on the lessons Utah Write provides. Parents can go online with the student and see their papers and scores. We encourage you to have your students practice their writing using Utah Write and monitor their scores and progress. We hope you will be able to utilize this program to the fullest extent possible!
We raised $945.82 to help Hannah and her family pay for medical expenses. A big thank you to all who contributed!

If you did not get signed up at Back To School Night, please go to the PTO website and register. For those who do not have access to e-mail, please let the office know that you want information sent home with your child in printed form. We hope to save many trees this year! Remember that roller blades, skateboards, scooters and bikes are not to be ridden or used on school grounds and in the building. Before entering onto school property, students need to remove roller blades, carry skateboards and walk their scooters and bikes. All bikes brought to the school should be properly stored in one of the bikes racks provided by the school. It is strongly recommended that all students lock their bikes.
